What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a malignant disease appeared in the cells of the breast tissue. These cells often are arisen from the ducts or lobules in the breast, which can spread in the tissues or organs and other parts of the body.
Breast cancer usually happens in women and risk increases with age. According to statistics, 10% of breast cancer cases occur before age 40, 25% occur before age 50 and more than 50% occur after 50 years. This disease is also in men but very rare.
24% reduction of breast cancer risk by eating fruits and vegetables
Researchers at Harvard University conducted a study of 90,000 American women over two decades. Lifestyle and dietary habits are examined in detail. The factors related to breast cancer risk, such as body mass index, menopause, family history, weight change, use of alcohol … are taken into account. Results showed that women who ate more fiber from vegetables and fruits a day when they were young may reduce by 24% the risk of breast cancer than those who ate fewer vegetables.
Scientists believe that fiber may prevent the absorption of estrogen, which protects the body against cancer. Eating habits established during puberty and adulthood strongly affects the body’s hormones, and it is extremely important period for each person.
Teenagers consume 28g of fiber a day at most, the equivalent of two apples, a portion of broccoli, a banana, peas and two slices of bread. If you eat more 10g of fiber daily, for example, two apples, or apples and 1-2 slices of bread can be reduced by 13% risk of breast cancer.
Breast cancer is a highly prevalent disease in the UK, with over 12% of infected women and about 50,000 new patients each year. “The diet from a young age is an important factor causing the risk of cancer in the future,” said Dr. Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition.
Recently, the research of Harvard University and the University of East Anglia has shown that eating fruits and vegetables rich in flavonoids such as strawberries, blueberries, apples, pears, , and beets … may be useful for weight loss. Some other foods also contain flavonoid such as tea, chocolate, wine…
